Paro becomes spectacular during the Paro Tshechu festival. With the majestic dzong, lush valleys and a pristine river, the town looks nothing less than a painting. Anf this time is when paro sees the biggest crowd ever with devotees coming in colorful dresses to witness the festival.
Day 1 : Arrive at Paro and drive to Thimphu
Welcome to Bhutan. You will be received by your guide for this trip at the Paro International Airport. We will stop by Chelela, the highest motor able pass at 3988 meters above the sea level and then drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital (about 65 kilometers/2hours). After reaching the hotel and resting for a short while, we will visit the National Memorial Chorten built in honor of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk and the Centenary Farmers’ Market. Farmers from all over Bhutan come to this market to sell their local products.
You will then be driven to Motithang Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s National Animal. You can choose to check into the light life of Thimphu for local beer or retire for the day.
Day 2 : Sightseeing in Thimphu and drive to Punakha
After breakfast we will first go and visit the Statue of Buddha at Kuenselphodrang. It is one of the biggest statue of Buddha Doderma in the world and presents a panoramic view of the entire Thimphu city.
Our next stop will be the National Folk Heritage Museum. It is dedicated to connecting people with the rich Bhutanese Folk heritage and rural Bhutanese history. We will then proceed to the Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory. Here you can see the art of making traditional paper called desho which was used by monks to write prayers.
After lunch we will stop by the Simtokha Dzong before heading to Punakha. Simtokha is the one of first Dzongs built in Bhutan in1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. Today it is school for learning Dzongkha, the national language of Bhutan. On the way to Punakha, we will pass by the scenic Duchula pass at 3100m. If it is a clear day you will be able to get the best view of Eastern Himalayas, if it’s a cloudy day, we will check it on our way back the next day.
Punakha is the winter seat of the Je-Khenpo, Chief Abbot of Bhutan. After going in the hotel, we will stroll around the Khuru town and call it a day.
Day 3 : Punakha sightseeing and drive to Phobjikha
Punakha Dzong, the winter residence of Je-Khenpo is a magnificent 180m long and 72m wide perfect example of Bhutanese architecture. Built in 1637, it is the second oldest Dzong in Bhutan. After visiting the Dzong we will head Phobjikha.
Day 4 : Phobjikha to Paro
The Phobjikha valley is most known for its scenic splendor and cultural uniqueness. It houses the endangered black-necked cranes Grus nigricollis, 13 other globally threatened species. The stunning valleys ranging from 2800m to 4000m boasts of its numerous trekking trails.
Day 5 : Paro Tshecho
One of the biggest festivals of Bhutan, Paro Tshechu is held at Rinpung Dzong to celebrate the birth anniversary of Padmasambhava also known as Guru Rinpoche. Holding a religious significance, the festival lets the tourists and locals witness a unique dance form of Bhutan, the Mask Dance inside the courtyard of the dzong. You can meet locals dressed in colorful Bhutanese attire.
Day 6 : Paro sightseeing and Taktshang Hike
Behold, it’s the Taktshang Hike. Taktshang isn’t just for the tourists and many locals hike to visit the monastery every day. Adroned by prayer flags and the iconic Taktshang monastery built on a super steep cliff is the view of a lifetime. But before we take the hike, we will visit the Drugyel Dzong meaning the victory castle.
Day 7 : Departure
Today will be the final day of this trip to exchange smiles as we drive to the airport and see you off. The tiny mystical kingdom bids you fond farewell and hope you made memories that you will take forever with you. We wish you best as you embark on a different journey and await your return.
