Jhomolhari Trek the most popular trekking routes in Bhutan. This trek offers great variety of Bhutanese landscape, flora and fauna. We will be passing thought farmland, nature and scattered settlements leading us into the deep and richly forested valley.
Day 1 : Arrive Paro
On arrival at Paro airport, you will be met by our representative. They will lead you to your hotel. By evening we will visit the Paro market and town and Spending the overnight at the hotel in Paro.
Day 2 : Paro
The next morning we will visit to Ta Dzong, built in 1651 as a watchtower. Later it was inaugurated as Bhutan’s National Museum. The collections in the museum include art, relics, religious thangkha paintings, postage stamps, coins and handicrafts, as well as a small natural history collection. After which we will visit the Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong), ‘the fortress of the heap of jewels’, built in 1646, and now housing the offices of the district administration and Paro’s monk body.
After lunch we will visit one of the oldest and sacred shrines in Bhutan knows as Kyichu Lhakhang which was built by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century.
Day 3 : Paro to Shana 17 km, 5-6 hours of trekking
We will be starting our trek on the third day. The trek of 17 km’s begins from Drukgyel Dzong which is at a high of 2580m with a short downhill walk on a wide trail.
The trek starts from Drukgyel Dzong (2,580m) with a short downhill walk on a wide trail. The trail then climbs gently through well maintained rice terraces and fields of millet. After which we will be come across an apple orchards and then forests. Soon the valley widens, and we reach the army post of Gunitsawa (2,810m). This is the last stop before Tibet. From there we will be moving upwards and beyond Sharma Zampa (2,870), where there are several good camping places in meadows surrounded by trees. We will be camping there and start our journey the next morning.
Day 4 : Shana to Soi Thangthangkha 20km, 7-8 hours of trekking
On the 2nd day of trek we will be walking along the Pa Chu (Paro River), ascending and descending through pine, oak and spruce forests. After crossing a bridge to the left bank of the river, we will be stopping for a lunch. Then we continue walking along the river, climbing upwards through rhododendron forests, and crossing the river once more before reaching our campsite (3,750 m).
Day 5 : Soi Thangthangka to Jangothang 19km, 7-8 hours
The trail gets steeper but the view gets better. On the 3rd day of trekking we will be climbing another 350 m and reach our campsite at Jangothang which is at 4,040 m. During this trek we will be crossing an army camp and then follow the same river. After few more hrs of trekking we will able to see the spectacular view of the surrounding peaks. Hot lunch is served at a yak herder’s camp. From our campsite we will be able to view the Jhomolhari and Jichu Drake which are incredibly stunning.
Day 6 : Jangothang to Lingshi 18km, 7-8 hours
Breathtaking view of the nature for the next 7-8 hrs of our trek. We will be able to view beautiful mountains, stream and forest. For the first hr of our walk we will follow a stream leading to the start of our first ridge. You will enjoy the astonishing view of Jhamolhari, Jichu Drake and Tserimgang. The trail then takes us across a fairly level valley floor until the climb up to Nyele-la pass (4,700m). We descend gradually from the pass to our camp site at Lingshi (4,000m), enjoying a panoramic view of the mountain peaks and Lingshi Dzong as we walk.
Day 7 : Lingshi to Shodu 22km, 8-9 hours
On the 5th day of trek our trail climbs up towards a small white chorten and then turns south to the deep Mo Chu valley. The trail stays on the west side of this largely treeless valley. It then crosses the river, and climbs steeply for two hours to Yeli-la (4,820m).Upon reaching Yeli-la on a clear day you can see Jhomolhari, Gangchenta, Tserimgang and Masagang from this pass. On the last few hrs of trek for the day we will descend alongside a stream to a rock shelter in the cliff face, and then continue walking downstream until reaching Shodu (4,100 m), where we camp in a meadow with a chorten in it.
Day 8 : Shodu to Barshong 16km, 6-7 hours
After crossing through the treeless valley we entered back to the tree line and our path follows the course of the Thimphu Chu. We will be able to view rhododendron, juniper and mixture of alpine plants when crossing the forest. There are also stunning views of rocky cliff and waterfalls along the way. Then the trail takes us gradually upwards to the ruins of Barshong Dzong (3,600m), near which we camp for the night.
Day 9 : Barshong to Dolam 15km, 5-6 hours
On the second last day of our trek the trail descends gently through a dence forest of rhododendron, birch and conifers and then drops steeply until we meet the Thimphu River. Then the trail runs along the left bank of the river, climbing over ridges and descending into gullies where side streams run down into the river. The final stage of the trail climbs around a cliff face high above the Thimphu Chu, coming out onto pastureland where we camp for the night at 3,600m.
Day 10 : Dolam to Dodena to Thimphu 8km, 3 hours
For the final day we will trek alongside the Thimphu chu. Then we drop southwards to the road at Dodena. From there we will drive to Thimphu.
The trail winds in and out of side valleys above the Thimphu Chu, making a long ascent through a forest of conifers and high altitude broadleaf species to a pass at 3,510m. The trail then drops steeply down to the river, following it southward to the road head at Dodena (2,600m). Etho Metho transport meets us here, and we drive to Thimphu. After 8 exciting days of trekking we will spend our night at hotel in Thimphu.
Day 11 : Thimphu to Paro
For the final day in the country we will be visiting the following places in Thimphu:
National Memorial Chorten;
Tashichhodzong (the fortress of the glorious religion);
National Library;
Institute for Zorig Chusum (Bhutanese arts and crafts school);
National Institute of Traditional Medicine ( outside only );
Handicrafts Emporium.
And by evening we will drive to Paro and spend the night there.
Day 12 : Paro Depart
After breakfast, we will drive you to Paro airport for flight to onward destination.
