Some of the country’s oldest Buddhist temples and monasteries are found in the picturesque Bumthang valley, which is also known as the nation's religious center. This three-day trip offers a unique opportunity to get in touch with Bhutanese rural life as it meanders through the countryside of Bumthang, passing past a number of villages.
Day 1 : Arrive Paro
On arrival at Paro airport, you will be met by our representative and escorted to the hotel. Spend the night at the hotel in Paro.
Day 2 : Paro
The next morning we will visit to Ta Dzong, built in 1651 as a watchtower. Later it was inaugurated as Bhutan’s National Museum. The collections in the museum include art, relics, religious thangkha paintings, postage stamps, coins and handicrafts, as well as a small natural history collection. After which we will visit the Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong), ‘the fortress of the heap of jewels’, built in 1646, and now housing the offices of the district administration and Paro’s monk body.
After lunch we will visit one of the oldest and sacred shrines in Bhutan knows as Kyichu Lhakhang which was built by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century.
Day 3 : Paro-Thimphu
Drive to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital of the present. Upon reaching to the capital city we will visit Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan's most ancient fortress (constructed in 1627), which stands on a small hilltop on the right side of the road around 7 kilometers before Thimphu. And then visit the National Memorial Chorten (constructed as a memorial to Bhutan's third king and as a monument to world peace). Later on visit the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, where herbal medicines are prepared and dispensed and also the Institute for Zorig Chusum, where students are taught the 13 traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan and finally the National Library, which has a sizable collection of Buddhist texts, as time permits after lunch. We will spend the night at the capital city in a hotel.
Day 4 : Thimphu-Trongsa
On the 4th day we travel a distance of 186 km to reach Trongsa. After travelling for almost an hr we will reach Dochu-la pass (3088 m). On a clear day there is a superb view of Bhutan’s higest perks namely Masagang (7,158m), Tsendegang (6,960m), Terigang (7 ,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Zongaphugang (7,060m) a table mountain that dominates the isolated region of Lunana, and finally, Gangkar Puensum, the highest peak in Bhutan at 7,497m. Continue on to Wangduephodrang town, which is also our lunch stop. Then proceed to Trongsa over Pele-la pass (3,300m), the traditional boundary between east and west. Overnight at the lodge in Trongsa.
Day 5 : Trongsa-Bumthang
Before beginning our journey we will be visiting the striking Trongsa Dzong. After which we will visit the Ta Dzong, built as a watchtower to guide Trongsa Dzong which was now a museum. From there we will start our journey to Bumthang which will take us about 2 hrs. By afternoon visit the 17th century Jakar Dzong and then Kurje monastery, built in the 17th century to mark the place where Guru Padma sambhava had meditated in the 8th century, leaving his body imprint on the rock. Spending the overnight at the lodge in Bumthang.
Day 6 : Bumthang-Ngang Lhakhang 14km, 6 hours
Get your gears ready because the trek begins today. The trek route follows the Chamkhar Chu (river), taking us through meadows, forests of blue pine and scrub bamboo. We will pass by many villages and temples, on this very relaxing and easy day. Camping overnight at a village (2,900 m)
Day 7 : Ngang Lhakhang-Ugyenchholing
On the second day of the trek, our trail gradually climbs through juniper woodland as it approaches the Phephe-la pass (3,340m). From there it descends to Tang Valley from there, the trail eventually reaches Ugyenchholing village (2,850m). Spend the night camped along the riverside close to the settlement. The nature along the trail seriously gets beautiful and there are many more exciting things to be experienced.
Day 8 : Ugyenchholing-Bumthang 11km, 4 hours
Early morning, we will walk up to Ugyenchholing Palace, a beautiful private mansion which are small eco-museum. From there we will drive back to Buamthang following the Tang Chu until arriving at the main road. On the way visit the Mebar Tso Lake, where Terton Pema Lingpa is said to have discovered religious treasures in the 15th century. This lake is very sacred, and on auspicious days many Bhutanese people go there to offer butter lamps. Overnight at the lodge in Bumthang
Day 9 : Bumthang – Punakha
In the morning we will be visiting some of the religious place in Bumthang like Jambay Lhakhang, build in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. After which we will visit come more places which contains ancient painting and a lots of religious items.
After that we will drive to Punakha which is about 214 km. overnight at Punakha.
Day 10 : Punakha – Paro
On the 10th day we will travel to Paro from Punakha which will take about 3 hrs.
It will be a relaxing day where we could go shopping and take a stroll around Paro market in the evening. Spend the night at the hotel in Paro.
Day 11 : Paro Depart
Early breakfast in the hotel and drive to the airport for flight to onward destination
