Located 3 km from Meenakshi Temple, Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is a famous Hindu temple in Madurai. It came into existence in the year 1646 when the soil of this region was dug for some construction. A self-manifested idol of Lord Vinayaka was discovered by Thirumalai Nayak and after the incident, a pond was constructed that spans a total area of 16 acres. The main shrine is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman who is considered as the ‘Guardian Deity of Madurai'. The pond water is used rituals conducted in the temple.
