An ode to divinity, the mention of The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary calls for adulation for its resplendent architectural styles such as Neo- Classic, Renaissance and Baroque amalgamated to offer this Mexican cathedral the most fascinating look. In America it is in fact referred as the largest and the oldest known Roman Catholic cathedral.
This church was built with incessant work of artisans and sculptors, stretching over the period of two centuries that lie between 1573 and 1813. It is also eulogized for being the sitting position of the Mexican Roman Catholic Archdiocese.
The Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral is located near to the Plaza de la Constitución. It was constructed after the Spanish battle with Tenochtitlán got over, and the church superseded the old original church. Designed under the directions of Claudio de Arciniega who was an architect from Spain, the church displays Gothic aesthesis to the core. There are four entrances that welcome the people with marvellous statues and there are two towers that are embellished with some twenty-five bells in the church.
There is also a sacred place specially reserved for baptism practices just adjacent to the church. This tabernacle is also used for registering the regular church goers, or devotees who wish to make church their residence. The church hosts fourteen chapels dedicated to some or the other saint and where public is also allowed to ingress. The whole church is infused with embellished altars, fine paintings, elegant furniture, etc. Below the floor superficies of the cathedral the remains of the departed archbishops have been treasured and the place is used as a crypt.
