The capital of Ladakh is Leh and lies on an altitude of 3500 mts above sea level. Ladakh is the most remote region of India, a barren, virtually rainless area which lies north of the Himalayas, and area known geographically as the Tibetan plateau. The Himalayas serve as a barrier to clouds carrying rain from the south, virtually none of it gets across to fall on Ladakh. The result is the ‘ moonland’ label- much of Ladakh looks much like the moon, a barren, grey-brown landscape utterly devoid of vegetation. Only where rivers, running from far- away glaciers or melting snow, carry water to habitation do you find plant life.Stok Kangri is clearly visible from Leh, the capital of Ladakh in Northern India. Stok Kangri lies in the middle of the fascinating area of Ladakh, which is located in the northern part of Indian state "Jammu & Kashmir".The Stok Kangri trek is one of the most beautiful in Ladakh. Leh, the capital city and administrative capital of the Ladakh district offers ancient monasteries, colorful markets, abandoned royal palace and interesting Hindu, Buddhist and Islam encounters. The routes across Ladakh region also bring magnificent views over Zanskar Mountains and across the Karakoram snow capped peaks with fantastic Tibet panorama in the distance. Stok Kangri is considered to be a suitable 'starter expedition' for fit trekkers. It is an excellent first Himalayan peak and no previous experience of high altitude or mountaineering is required.
