Day 1 : Arrival and Windsor Castle
Arriving in to London Heathrow make your way (airport transfers available) to nearby Windsor. Your journey begins at your Windsor hotel at 2pm when you meet your tour director. A short stroll away we visit Windsor Castle, residence of The Queen and the largest inhabited castle in the world; see the lavishly decorated State Apartments and cobbled courtyards. By evening enjoy a welcome drink and dinner in your hotel, after which we take a brief walk around this compact and historic town with a local guide.
Day 2 : Salisbury and Stonehenge
This morning we make our way on to the Salisbury Plain to marvel at the prehistoric circle of vast monoliths at the iconic Stonehenge to try and uncover its mysteries; the visitor centre will provide a unique insight on its creation and possible purpose. Then to nearby Salisbury, a charming historic city that is dominated by the cathedral home to both England鈥檚 tallest spire and Europe鈥檚 oldest working clock. After continuing in to the South West of England we arrive in Tavistock, a market town on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and check in to your hotel.
Day 3 : Bodmin Moor, Lanhydrock House and Plymouth
This morning, we drive through the eerie Bodmin Moor, an area of Cornish countryside of wild and unspoiled natural beauty. High on the moor we鈥檒l make a photo-stop at the renowned Jamaica Inn; made famous by Daphne du Maurier's tale of smugglers and which later featured in film and television adaptations. Later we visit the glorious Lanhydrock House to explore this magnificent late-Victorian country manor and see the contrast of the grand family rooms and the 鈥渂elow stairs鈥 life in the kitchens and servant quarters. We then return to Plymouth to see the Mayflower Steps and cruise to Royal William Yard, former Royal Navy buildings.
Day 4 : Cornwall Coast, St Michael's Mount and St Ives
Today our drive takes us firstly to the picturesque village of Marazion located on the Cornish coast with magnificent golden beaches. From here enjoy views of the majestic St Michael鈥檚 Mount, a tidal island and important pilgrimage destination throughout the ages. Then onwards to St. Ives, and enjoy a walking tour of this harbour town, admiring the quaint bay and cobbled streets of this traditional Cornish fishing town. Enjoy time alone to browse the pretty shops and pubs at your leisure before returning back to your hotel in Tavistock where you will enjoy dinner.
Day 5 : The Roman Baths and Cardiff, Capital of Wales
Returning north, we head for Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage City; see the elegant Regency architecture before visiting the wonderfully-preserved 2000 year-old Roman Baths and Pump Room, renowned for mineral-rich hot springs. A short onward drive takes us over the border to Wales and to Cardiff, the nation鈥檚 capital where we enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city鈥檚 key sights. By evening we tour the magnificent Cardiff Castle before sitting down for a Welsh evening with dinner and some lively Welsh music and entertainment.
Day 6 : The Brecon Beacons, Hay-on-wye and Shrewsbury
Our journey today takes us through the majestic scenery of mid-Wales as we pass through the Brecon Beacons National Park on route to Hay-on-Wye; Hay is the self-proclaimed second-hand-book capital of Britain where you can browse the cluster of local and specialist bookstores in this unique town. Then through the Shropshire Hills to medieval border town of Shrewsbury, where we enjoy a walking tour with the local town crier to see the timberwork architecture, pleasant gardens and learn about the history of the area. Later we continue through Cheshire to our hotel for dinner.
Day 7 : North Wales, Conwy and Historic Chester
Today we enjoy a journey in to North Wales; we pass through Llangollen and the Horseshoe Pass for wonderful vistas and where we visit a working farm and view the resident sheep-dogs in a demonstration of their skill and training. We then continue through the foothills of the Snowdonia National Park to Conwy, a charming historic town dominated by it 13th century fortress; we enjoy a walking tour through the labyrinth of cobbled streets and harbour and see the smallest house in Britain. Finally, we head to Chester where another walking tour will reveal the unique medieval black-and-white buildings (or Rows), a wonderful cathedral and ancient Roman city walls.
Day 8 : The Lake District and Traditional Scottish Evening
Continuing North we make our way through the glorious Lake District, a region associated with the children鈥檚 author, Beatrix Potter, and the poet, William Wordsworth. We may stop in the charming village of Grasmere, where Wordsworth lived and see his final resting place at St Oswald鈥檚 Chapel. We then cross the border in to Scotland where we stop at the Old Blacksmith鈥檚 Shop in Gretna Green, once a destination for eloping English couples, today it is a popular shopping venue for quality Scottish goods. After a drive through the Scottish borders regions we check in to our hotel on the outskirts of Edinburgh and head out to a Scottish evening with speciality dishes and lively music.
Day 9 : Edinburgh City and Edinburgh Castle
Today is spent in the magnificent Scottish capital 鈥 explore central Edinburgh on a brief tour from the elegant avenues of the Georgian "New Town" to the cobbled Royal Mile and its tangle of medieval houses. We then tour Edinburgh Castle to see St Margaret's Chapel, the Crown Jewels of Scotland and the mysterious Stone of Destiny. The afternoon is free for you to explore the city at your leisure. On Jul 29 to Aug 12 departures, experience the world-famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on the castle Esplanade.
Day 10 : Glamis Castle and St Andrews
Today we take a tour of Glamis Castle, the famous setting of Shakespeare鈥檚 鈥淢acbeth鈥 and childhood home of the Queen mother. We cross over the Tay Bridge to the picturesque medieval town of St Andrews, famously known as the world's "魅影直播 of Golf" and location of Scotland's oldest university, where Prince William and Kate Middleton first met. We take a panoramic tour around the town, after enjoying free time to explore and visit the ancient ruins of St Andrews Castle and Cathedral and browsing the quaint boutiques. Later we return to Edinburgh where we make our way to a nearby traditional pub for dinner together as a group.
Day 11 : Tour Ends in Edinburgh
Your touring programme ends after breakfast this morning. There are transfers available to return you to Edinburgh Airport however alternatively you may choose to continue exploring Edinburgh independently or make onward travel to other destinations, perhaps returning to London or Glasgow by rail.
