The North Island thoroughly engages the spirit and the body, often at the same time. On this trip, you’ll learn about sustainable living tips on a conservation farm and engage with Maori culture straight from the source while bunking in villages in the bush. Elsewhere its all about the coastline, you’ll sea kayak the Raglan harbour, get a surfing lesson from an expert and overnight on a houseboat.
Day 1 : Auckland
Arrive in Auckland at any time. There are no planned activities during the day, so check into the hotel and explore the city, but make sure you're back in time to meet your group 7pm. After introductions, your CEO will review the details of your trip.
Day 2 : Auckland - Bay of Islands
Travel north via back roads, stopping to see giant kauri trees, and go for an included snorkel at Goat Island Marine Reserve (seasonal). Board a large houseboat for an overnight trip through the beautiful Bay of Islands. Please note: during the winter months (late April - early November) Goat Island snorkelling will be cancelled due to an earlier departure time for the houseboat. As a result, there will be more time for activities on board the houseboat.
Day 3 : Bay of Islands - Paihia
This morning, take your pick between kayaking, snorkelling, fishing or visiting nearby islands. Opt to go on a dolphin watching tour. Disembark with some time to explore Paihia before an evening barbecue. Spend the afternoon with free time back at the small town of Paihia. An optional visit to the Treaty House in the nearby town of Waitangi is highly recommended.
Day 4 : Paihia - Auckland
Free time in the morning before traveling back to Auckland.

Day 5 : Auckland - Raglan
Visit a special conservation farm to learn about their methods before sea kayaking to a harbour for a picnic lunch. Afterwards, kayak to a remote part of the harbour for a boat cruise and lunch, before heading to our lodge a few minutes drive from the famous surf and arts town of Raglan for the night.
Day 6 : Surf Raglan
Enjoy an expert guided surf lesson with all gear to make it easy as possible (large boards) included. The afternoon is open for optional activities such as bone carving with local Maori, mountain biking or exploring the many trails.
Day 7 : Raglan - Rotorua
Opt to go caving at Waitomo before heading to Rotorua. Visit a historic Maori village with a local guide who explains the geothermal aspects of the area. Learn about local myths and legends and enjoy dining on Hangi traditional cuisine.
Day 8 : Rotorua - National Park
After a short drive, enjoy the scenery as the road skirts around Lake Taupo region, en route to National Park. An early start today so that you can hike (unguided) the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, New Zealand's top-rated 1-day trek (seasonal). After the trek, travel to a ski lodge on the side of a mountain for the night. An on-site spa and sauna is available to help ease tired muscles.
Please note that during winter months (June-October), there is an extra cost of approximately $100 for winter equipment and guide. Note: if the weather is too bad to trek, there will be alternative options such as smaller walks in the area or a visit to remote hot springs. If you do not wish to do the Tongariro Crossing, other activities can be arranged.
Day 9 : National Park - Wellington
Head to the nation's capital and visit the national museum, Te Papa, or stroll along Oriental Parade. Famed for its cafe culture, Check out some of the area's great bars and cafés.
Day 10 : Wellington
Depart at any time. Or, add on the "Auckland Express" and ride with your CEO back north. Depart 6am and return to the Nomads Auckland hostel for around 5pm (8-9 hours driving time).
