Expect to find a blue/green universe dense with every species of African mammal in numbers and concentrations not seen elsewhere. Your Africa Kenya Safaris driver/guide will take you down the 609 m (2,000 ft) crater walls in your 4 x 4 Jeep to arrive in this isolated ecosystem of grassland, forest, and marshes layering the crater floor. Each environment supports its own celebration of wildlife.

You鈥檒l explore the Lerai Forest, rich with acacia trees and busy home to baboons, monkeys, waterbucks, and the big tusker bull elephants that frequent the caldera floor. It is here you may even be lucky enough to spot an elusive leopard.

We鈥檒l visit and perhaps enjoy our lunch at Lake Magadi, a blue/green algae lake that is the only source of food for the thousands of pink flamingoes that flock to the lakeshore. Along these banks, you may also lions, jackals, eland, and rhinos.

Nearby Ngoitoktok Springs bubbles from the earth at this lovely photographic spot where we can relax and likely spot hippos at the small pool and large hawks circling overhead.

The Volcanic Grasslands
Remember, we鈥檙e in a volcanic crater 鈥� the soil here is made from rich volcanic ash deposited here hundreds of thousands of years ago creating a fertile bed for thick vegetation. This foliage supports the thousands of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, buffalo, waterbuck, hartebeest, eland, spotted hyena, blue monkeys, and black rhinos.

And of course, throughout our day here in Ngorongoro, we鈥檒l be on the lookout for lions as this craterland supports Africa鈥檚 densest concentration of these regal big cats.

The Birds Are Everywhere
Not just by the lakes and marshes, but on the plains and grasslands you鈥檒l find a lavish assortment of species such as ostrich, Kori bustard, weavers, larks, storks, starlings, and lovebirds.

Adding to the rich avian life overhead look up to see raptors such as buzzards, the secretary bird, vultures, tawny eagles, and kites.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Ngorongoro Crater Safari 187 km 鈥� 4 hr. drive

  5:00 am 鈥� We鈥檒l start early to ensure you have plenty of time on safari. Your Africa Kenya Safaris driver/guide will swing by in a private 4 x 4 Safari Jeep at your hotel, the airport, or other place of your choosing.
  
  You鈥檒l enjoy the sun rising over Africa鈥檚 fields as we travel through Maasai country and spot some of the herders with their cattle, on our way to the Ngorongoro Crater.
  
  Soon we鈥檒l be standing at the crater鈥檚 rim, taking in the deep and vibrant bowl-like expanse before us. This is our safari grounds for the day, our world of exploration awaits.
  
  We鈥檒l descend the steep crater walls landing in a space unlike any other in Africa. This contained environment supports over 30,000 animals 鈥� predators, grazers, birds, and unexpected species like hippos and flamingoes.
  
  The day will be filled with monkeys, baboons, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, rhinos, elephants, wildebeests, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and of course, lions and perhaps even leopards.
  
  We will picnic at Lake Magadi or Ngoitoktok Springs with hippos and flamingoes for entertainment.
  
  Toward late afternoon, we鈥檒l enjoy one more natural surprise Ngorongoro gifts its visitors: back up on the crater rim, we will witness one of the area鈥檚 signature and spectacular sunsets. A glowing finish to a dazzling day safari.
  
  And then we will head to Arusha, bringing you back to your hotel or other place of your choosing.
