Nagarhole is pronounced as Naagra-holay which means Snake River. Nagarhole sanctuary derives its name from a serpentine river which flows through the park. Spread over an area of 571 square km in the districts of Coorg and Mysore and the sanctuary is just 94 kms from Mysore. Nagarahole National Park is home to the highest number of tigers in India among other animals. Nagarahole boasts of having the highest density of Bengal Tigers in the world .The teak forests of Nagarahole include some of the oldest plantations of the country dating back to 1800s.
