Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival

You will be met at Mpumalanga Airport and transferred to your hotel on the scenic Panorama Route.

Check into your hotel in this beautiful region.

  • Day 2 : Drakensberg Panorama Route

Today we recommend a tour of the beautiful Drakensberg Panorama Route, including a drive through the green Blyde River Canyon - the third largest in the world.

Enjoy wonderful views from Graskop Gorge Lift and God's Window, view several lovely waterfalls and visit the unusual Bourkes Luck Pot Holes - cylindrical holes formed from the swirling waters of the Blyde and Treur Rivers.

We return to your hotel in the late afternoon.

Tour departs Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday only.

  • Day 3 : Kruger National Park

This morning visit Hazyview Elephant Sanctuary to experience a very special close-up encounter with these gentle giants.

Afterwards transfer to the world famous Kruger National Park. After checking into your lodge, enjoy your first thrilling game drive in an open-top vehicle accompanied by a ranger. Game viewing opportunities should present themselves almost immediately and hopefully you will see several species of antelope, zebra, wildebeest and maybe even giraffe today - as well as several of the Big Five - before dining under the stars in the atmosphere that only the African bushveld can provide.

  • Day 4 : Kruger National Park

Rise at dawn to take advantage of the best game viewing conditions of the day, as you enjoy an open-top game viewing drive with a lodge ranger in the world famous Kruger National Park.

Explore some of this vast game sanctuary that is the size of Wales, offering magnificent game viewing opportunities and the highest concentration of lion in the whole of Africa. Hope to see several of the Big Five today - lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino - as well as many other species before returning to your lodge for breakfast.

The rest of the morning is free to relax by the swimming pool or enjoy bird watching at the lodge, before setting out again in the late afternoon for another game drive. With nearly 150 different species of mammals and over 100 species of reptiles in the Kruger National Park, you can hope to see cheetah, giraffe, hippo, kudu, crocodiles, sable antelope, waterbuck, warthogs, baboons, wild dogs and many other interesting animals. With over 500 different bird species including eagles, kingfishers, vultures and storks, outstanding bird watching is also guaranteed.

After a beautiful African sunset, enjoy the balmy evening and pristine stars of the Milky Way as you have never seen them before – as well as the spectacular Southern Cross.

After a beautiful African sunset, enjoy the balmy evening and pristine stars of the Milky Way as you have never seen them before – as well as the spectacular Southern Cross.

  • Day 6 : Table Mountain

Time permitting enjoy some final early morning game viewing, before your 3-hour transfer to Mpumulanga Airport for your onward flight.

You will be met at Cape Town Airport and transferred to your hotel in this beautiful city, within sight of Table Mountain.

Check in and relax in your magnificent surroundings.

  • Day 7 : Cape Town

Today is free for independent sightseeing in Cape Town.

We recommend you purchase a day pass onboard the convenient Hop-Off Bus, which stops at all Cape Town’s key sights and beaches. The "Red Route" bus stops at the Table Mountain base station, where you can buy a ticket to ascend by cable car and enjoy one of the world’s most famous views. Continue to Camps Bay beach and the many attractions of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

  • Day 8 : Hout Bay

Today we recommend an optional full day tour to the beautiful Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, where you may see baboons, ostrich and perhaps even dolphins or whales in season (July/November).

Your tour travels through Hout Bay and along spectacular Chapman’s Peak Drive to the Cape Point peninsula, returning via Simons Town, Fish Hoek, Constantia and Kirstenbosch Gardens. This is a scenic tour of the whole Cape Peninsula, with the optional opportunity of visiting the penguin colony at Boulders Beach.

  • Day 9 : Cape Town

At leisure to relax and explore the 'Mother City' of Cape Town.

Many optional activities are available in this beautiful city. You can visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned (advance booking essential in season), Kirstenbosch Gardens and the vibrant Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

Golf and deep sea game fishing are available, or you can or simply relax on Camps Bay beach – the choice is yours.

  • Day 10 : Franschhoek Valley

Today we recommend an optional full day tour to the renowned Stellenbosch Winelands, travelling through the scenic Franschhoek Valley where a handful of French Huguenot refugees started South Africa’s now famous wine industry.

Explore the historic university town of Stellenbosch and several wine estates on this famous wine route, which stretched from Paarl through to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Enjoy a cellar tour and some wine tasting, before returning to Cape Town in the late afternoon.

  • Day 11 : Rovos Rail Lounge

Transfer from your hotel to the Rovos Rail Lounge, Transnet Building, No 1 Adderley Street (across from Cape Town Station) at 10.00 to board the Rovos Rail Pride of Africa departing 11.00 for Pretoria.

Relax and enjoy the elegance of luxury 5-star train travel of a bygone age, as you settle in to your wood-panelled coach for your 48-hour rail journey, enjoying fine cuisine and outstanding personal service as you travel over 1,000 miles through some of South Africa’s most spectacular scenery.

After travelling through the mountains and vineyards of the beautiful Cape Winelands and the Du Toits Kloof tunnel, the train continues to Worcester, De Doorns and Touws River. Arrive Matjiesfontein at 18h00 where passengers may disembark and walk to this quaint and authentically preserved Victorian village. Depart Matjiesfontein at 19h00 continuing overnight to Beauford West and De Aar in the Great Karoo.

Dress code on the train during the day is smart casual, with comfortable walking shoes for the off-train excursion. Evenings are generally more formal, with most guests enjoying the opportunity to dress up in cocktail or evening wear including black tie (although collar & tie is acceptable).

  • Day 12 : Kimberley

We arrive in the diamond town of Kimberley around 14h30 and disembark for a tour of the famous Big Hole and Open Mine Museum. With a surface area of over 40 acres and a perimeter of over 1 mile, this open-pit area was mined to a depth of over 3,000 feet at the height of the diamond rush – the largest hand-dug excavation in the world. At the Village Museum you can also view Eureka, the first recorded diamond discovered in South Africa.

We depart from Kimberley around 16h00 and travel past a lake that is home to a spectacular flock of flamingos, continuing northwards through the farmlands of the Free State and Transvaal towards Pretoria.

  • Day 13 : Departure

Enjoy your last morning of elegant train travel through the Transvaal and arrive at the gracious colonial-style Capital Park Railway Station around 12.00.

You will be met at the station and, time permitting, taken on a short city tour of Pretoria, including historic Church Square and the magnificent Union Buildings - the official residence of the President, designed by Sir Herbert Baker. Also see the impressive Voortrekker Monument before you transfer 30-minutes to Johannesburg Airport for your flight home.

NOTE: Arrival in Pretoria can be significantly delayed due to commuter rail traffic, so you must not book your flight before 19.00.
