Arrive Leh and transfer to the hotel. After welcome drink and breakfast take complete rest for acclimatization to the high altitude and rarefied air of Ladakh. In the late afternoon proceed on an orientation tour of the old city center where you will take leisurely walks through the markets of this historic town which once served as the Caravan Centre for the Central Asian traders. Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, proceed on sightseeing tour of the Sham Valley circuit, driving through picturesque landscape along the Indus River, all the way to the pretty village of Alchi where the Alchi Choskor Monastic complex is the main attraction. Founded during the 11th century by Ringchen Zangpo, the Great Translator, Alchi Choskor is the oldest surviving monastic heritage of Ladakh, famous for its ancient wall frescoes and architecture - now a UNESCO listed heritage site. Leaving Alchi and driving back towards Leh, take a short trip up the hill to visit the magnificent Likir Monastery located on a hillock overlooking the valley. A major Gelukpa foundation dating from the 14th century. A recently installed colossal image of the Maitreya Buddha seated out in the open presents an impressive sight as one approaches the monastery. Returning from Likir, continue the journey to Leh, en-route visiting Sangam (confluence of Indus & Zanskar Rivers), Magnetic Point on the highway where you can observe the unique magnetic effect on vehicles, Pathar Sahib Gurudwara and Hall of Fame (Museum of military heritage in Ladakh). Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast leave for Nubra Valley, driving across Khardong-la (alt: 18,380 ft.), highest motor-able pass in the world. From the pass one can have spectacular views of the peaks and ridges of the Zanskar range across the Indus Valley in the south, and of the Saser massif in the north. Nubra lies to the north of Leh, between the Karakoram & Ladakh ranges of the Himalayas, at an average altitude of the valley is 10,000 ft above sea level and is drained by the Shayok And Siachen Rivers. Till closure of the trans-Karakoram trade route by the Chinese in 1949, Nubra Valley was a busy trade corridor on the Central Asian trade route network. Reach Deskit - Hunder in the afternoon and check-in at your camp / hotel. Rest of the day is at leisure to explore Hundar and the white Sand Dunes where you can also take a short camel Safari on the double-humped Bactrian camel found here (optional service). Overnight at a deluxe camp or hotel.
After breakfast, explore Deskit (headquarters of Nubra valley) and then drive up the hillside to visit the dramatically located 15th century Deskit Monastery perched high on a rock promontory above the village. On way to the monastery, you can stop to admire the gigantic image of Maitreya Buddha (32 mtrs) seated out on a hillock which was installed in 2010. Later drive back to Leh, retracing the road across Khardongla, reaching in the afternoon. Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, leave for Pangong Lake, driving upstream the Indus Rivertill Karu and then along the winding road up the Ladakh range and crossing the Chang-la pass, 3rd highest motor able pass in the world (alt: 17370 ft. / 5486 meters). Pangong Lake (alt: 14,500 ft.), largest brackish water lake of Asia, is about 4-5 kms wide and about 135 kms long, of which some two-third portion lies on the other side of the Indo-China border. Spend rest of the day admiring the spectacular setting of the area and sightseeing around the lake. Later check into a camp near the lake. Overnight in a deluxe camp at Pangong.
After breakfast, leave Pangong Lake and retrace the road to Leh via Chang-la pass. Upon reaching Karu, take a short side trip across the Indus to visit the 17th century Hemis Monastery, located in a secluded side valley. It is the biggest monastery of Ladakh and the principal centre of the Drukpa-Kargyut monastic order in the region. Hemis is famous for the annual festival of Hmis-Tsechu, commemorating the birth of Guru Padmasambhava, during which the famous mask dances are performed. A museum set up recently in the complex displays some of the art treasure built up through the centuries and is well worth exploring. Later drive back to Leh, reaching in the late afternoon. Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast drive up the Indus Valley to visit Thiksey Monastery (20 kms), an impressive complex of neatly painted building blocks rising in 12 levels along a hillock overlooking the valley. A major Gelukpa foundation dating from the 16th century, Thiksey is one of the most vibrant & active monasteries in the region. If you wish to witness the famous Morning Prayer ceremony at Thiksey, you will have to reach at the monastery by sunrise. Returning from Thiksey, you may like to walk up the palace hill at Shey to visit Shey Palace believed to be the earliest royal capital of the Namgyal Dynasty in the 16th century. Within the complex you can view the gigantic copper- gilt statue of the Buddha. The lamps burning in front of this image include an enormous one of silver encrusted with turquoises, which is said to hold enough butter to keep it alight for a year. Another gigantic statue of a seated Buddha, also made of gilded copper, is housed in an adjoining temple. Both these statues were installed during the 17th century and crafted by artisans specially brought from Nepal. Another popular site on this tour route is the Druk Padma School at Shey, famously called Rancho School featured in the super hit Bollywood film Three Idiots. After your lunch break, drive to visit Shanti Stupa, a prominent landmark of Leh located on a great vantage point overlooking Leh town & the valley beyond. Thereafter proceed to visit the 9-storey Leh Palace dating from the 1600 AD, a historic landmark of Ladakh which renders to the Leh town a unique heritage character. Wind up the trip with a short walking tour of the main markets in the city center. Overnight at the hotel.
