Meskel celebration is one of the most recognized and colorful religious festival in Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. It has been celebrated in the country for over 1600 years. The word actually means 鈥淐ross鈥� and the feast commemorates the discovery of the true cross upon which Jesus was crucified by the Empress Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great. The original event took place on 19 March, AD 326, but the feast is now celebrated on 27 September when all the colorfully dressed priests, dickens, and quarries are moving to the Meskel Square escorting by the local Christians by singing, chanting and dancing religious songs. Meskel Square is the special place for the celebration where the big bonfire is built and decorated by seasonal golden yellow Meskel flowers and crosses.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Arrival at Addis Ababa

  Arrival to Addis Ababa, be met at the APT by the tour leader, get assisted and transfer to hotel.
  Addis Ababa the name of the city, in Amharic, means 鈥淣ew flower鈥� Founded in 1886 by Menelik II , it is located at 2,500 m (8202 ft) above sea level in one of the highest parts of the Entoto Mountain chain (3,000 m / 9842 ft above sea level). Addis Ababa is a pleasant city with wide avenues of Jacaranda trees, interesting museums and one of the largest open-air markets in Africa, known as the 鈥淢ercato鈥� Over night in - Panorama Hotel (4*).
• Day 2 : Drive Langano - Awash

  In the morning, drive to Awash visiting the tribal villages of the Oromo people, and in the afternoon game drive in the Awash National Park to visit wild animals like the Beisa Oryx, Lesser and Greater Kudu, Warthogs, and various lowland birds. You will also visit the magnificent Awash Falls. Over night in - Awash falls lodge Hotel
• Day 3 : Drive Awash - Bati - Dessie

  Drive to Bati which is famous for the largest cattle market of the country and the weekly market whereby the Amhara, Oromo, and the Afar people meet. Then, drive to Dessie. Over night in - Tossa Hotel.
• Day 4 : Drive Dessie - Lalibela

  Drive to the home of the 12th century rock hewn church of king Lalibela (UNESCO World Heritage Site) visiting the tribal villages of the Amhara people and the breathtaking Wollo Mountains. Over night in - Lal Hotel.
• Day 5 : Lalibela sight seeing

  In the morning, visit the six rock hewn churches of King Lalibela which are grouped as the 鈥榝irst group鈥�. And in the afternoon, visit the second and the third group of churches of Lalibela. Over night in - Lal Hotel.
• Day 6 : Drive Lalibela - Dessie

  Drive back to Dessie through the scenic Wollo Mountains. Over night in - Tossa Hotel.
• Day 7 : Drive Dessie - Addis

  Drive to Addis visiting the Tarma Ber Tunnels, and the escarpment of the Ethiopian Part of the Great African Rift Valley. Up on arrival in Addis Ababa; attend the most colorful religious celebration of eve of Meskel which is celebrated to memorize the foundation of the True Cross of Jesus Christ. Over night in - Panorama Hotel.
• Day 8 : Drive back to Addis and Departure

  In the morning, visit the Ethnological Museum of Addis Ababa and the holy Trinity Cathedral. In the evening, you will be guest of Maz Ethiopia Tour at one of the famous traditional restaurants of Addis where you enjoy watching the folkloric dances of the Ethiopian people, and taste Ethiopian meals. Then, be transferred out to the airport for your departure to your origin country.
