You will be picked up from African Tulip Hotel and drive to Marangu Gate for registration. This drive will take 2 hours. Our porters prepare and pack all of the supplies and luggage before we start our ascent on a cleared ridge trail through the rainforest. The forest, covered with mist and dripping with beards of moss, is also where most of Mt. Kilimanjaro’s animals are found. We will spend our first night at Mandara Hut, a group of wooden a-framed huts set in a forest clearing. Water is piped into the camp from springs above and there are flush toilets behind the main hut.
After an early breakfast you will walk from Mandara Hut passing through a short stretch of forest, skirting the base of the Maundi Crater and then emerging into the transition zone from rainforest to moorland. You will stop for lunch, with drinks, at the halfway mark. The 6 hour walk will have you arrive at Horombo Hut for dinner and your overnight stay.
After an early breakfast you will continue your ascent into the Alpine desert zone, passing the last place where water is available. From Kibo Hut the summit is now in site! You will reach the summit tomorrow. You will have dinner and go to bed early in order to get as much rest as possible for tomorrow’s adventure.
Your journey to the summit starts at 12:00am. You will wake-up, enjoy some tea and biscuits and then shuffle off into the night. This part of the journey is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer point (5250m). This spot is also a good resting point. The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (5681m), located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, requiring great physical and mental effort. From Gillman’s Point you will normally encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will be able to spend taking photographs before the descent back to Kibo Hut. After a short rest you will gather all your gear and head down to Horombo Hut. Later in the evening, you will enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned night’s sleep.
This will be your final day on the trek. After breakfast you will continue your descent to Marangu Gate where you will pick-up your summit certificates from the Park Headquarters. You will then have some memorable photos taken and participate in much celebration with all crew before being transferred back to Arusha and the airport. This is where your safari will end.
