Day 1 : Johannesburg
Welcome to Johannesburg, also known as Egoli, or The City of Gold, referring to the gold mining history of South Africa鈥檚 biggest city. Book a day or two ahead to explore this fast-paced city. A visit to Gold Reef City, the amusement park and museum built on an old mine shaft will give you the opportunity for a ride on the Shaft of Terror, a vertical-drop roller coaster that is known as the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Africa due to its sheer 47-metre drop. For the historically inclined there is the ever-popular Soweto tour or just jump on a Hop-On-Hop-Off bus to discover Johannesburg at your own pace. A welcome meeting will be held at 18:00 at your hotel. Your Tour Leader will brief you on the route and provide information on optional activities along the way. Afterwards, you will have the evening free to have dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants the city has to offer.
Day 2 : Johannesburg to Buyskop (Bela Bela)
The drive is not long today so you will be able to ease into your trip at a nice and slow pace. We will overnight in the Bela Bela area tonight. Formerly known as Warmbaths or Warmbad in Afrikaans. Bela Bela in the local language (Tswana) means the pot that boils, deriving its name from the geothermic hot spring. Buyskop Lodge where we will stay is situated in the beautiful Bushveld and offers various facilities and excellent lodging. Your chalet is situated at a dam where animals such as giraffe, kudu, zebra, impala and bushbuck come to quench their thirst. You might see these animals on one of the hiking trails the lodge offers. There is also a marvellous cold swimming pool in which you can cool off.
Day 3 : Bela Bela to Serowe Country Hotel
Today you cross from South Africa into Botswana on a longer drive in your comfortable Premium Overland Safari Vehicle. We overnight at the Serowe Country Hotel in the town of Serowe. After arrival in the late afternoon, you can just relax next to the pool with a refreshing drink or visit the Khama III Memorial Museum which showcases in detail the history of the influential and often controversial Khama family.
Day 4 : Serowe to Maun
Today we leave early morning for a long drive north-west across the Botswana interior towards Maun, Botswana鈥檚 fifth largest town. Once you arrive in Maun you will have the option to get a spectacular birds-eye view of the Okavango Delta from above in a small fixed wing aircraft (weather permitting). Looking down on the Delta from the aircraft, you will get a fair idea of the magnitude of this massive mix of land and water with its intricate system of channels and islands. You might also see families of elephant, giraffe, and herds of buffalo or even hippos from the air. If you skip the flight, you鈥檒l have the chance to kick back and relax at the lodge.
Day 5 : Maun
Today you will experience a new way of travelling 鈥 to go into the Okavango Delta with a mokoro, the same way as the local people do. You will be transferred to the 鈥樷檖olling鈥欌 station either with a motorized boat or a 4脳4 vehicle depending on the water levels of the Delta. A mokoro is a traditional dug-out canoe that seats two people. The mokoro is steered by a 鈥樷檖oler鈥 standing at the back, manoeuvring the mokoro downstream with a pole, very much like the gondoliers in Venice. Once you are comfortable and laid back in your mokoro, the slow and tranquil journey into The Delta begins. Gliding along on the quiet water you will have an unlimited source of opportunities to take exquisite photos of your surroundings. The duration of the mokoro trail depends on the time of year and water levels of the Delta. You will stop for lunch at an island and enjoy a nature walk of a few hours. Then you head back to Maun, again in your mokoro enjoying a last hour or two on the water while the late afternoon sun starts heading for the horizon.
Day 6 : Maun to Elephant Sands
Set out for Elephant Sands, which is close to the Botswanan village of Nata. Elephant Sands is famous for its watering hole, voted as one of the top ten watering holes in Africa. At this watering hole, you can expect to see animals such as wild dogs, different antelope species and of course elephants that walk through the campsite searching for fresh water. This will probably be the closest you will get to these wild animals on foot. With luck on your side, you may have the wonderful and unique experience of sitting in front of your tented room, watching elephants and other animals come and go to quench their thirst at the watering hole while you sip on a sundowner yourself.
Day 7 : Elephant Sands to Chobe River (Kasane)
Continue to the small town of Kasane, which is adjacent to the Chobe National Park & Chobe River. Relish the views during your included afternoon sunset boat cruise. Seeing animals on the banks of the river while you are sitting in a boat gives a totally unique perspective on the wildlife. Game like elephant, buffalo, kudu, bushbuck, hippo, giraffe and sable are commonly seen along the river edge, and it鈥檚 a birdwatcher鈥檚 paradise during the summer months. (You have an opportunity to go on an optional photo safari at your own expense, however, you would forfeit the included afternoon sunset boat cruise).
Day 8 : Chobe River (Kasane) to Victoria Falls
You can鈥檛 ask for a better way to start your day in search of wild animals on your included game drive in Chobe National Park. Afterwards, cross into Zimbabwe and enjoy a short drive to the magnificent Victoria Falls and its charming little town. This is your home base for the next two nights. The Victoria Falls is not the widest or highest falls but is regarded as the world鈥檚 biggest. It produces a breath-taking curtain of falling water as it drops into the gorge below. See why it鈥檚 considered among one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
Day 9 : Victoria Falls
Today you will have time to do some of the action-filled activities that the area offers. Bungee jump or gorge swing off the Victoria Falls Bridge that links Zambia and Zimbabwe and have a different view of the Victoria Falls at the same time. This bridge is constructed to carry railway, road and foot traffic. For an adrenaline activity, closer to the Zambezi River, choose a half day or full day white water rafting adventure. Many of our groups opt to book their final evening together aboard a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River with game-viewing, beautiful scenery and an open bar. Victoria Falls is the 鈥済etting on鈥 and 鈥済etting off鈥 hub for people who have booked shorter 鈥渓egs鈥 of your combo trip. You might lose some of your travel companions and new people might join. You might also have a change of vehicle and adventure crew (Tour Leader and Driver.) Although it might sound a bit daunting, please be assured that your vehicle will be the same standard and your adventure crew are very experienced in dealing with these changes to make it as smooth as possible. All adventure crew is committed to giving the best possible service but because all have their own style, own special recipes and own passion in regards to culture, fauna and flora, geology etc. having a change of crew will broaden your experience on the trip immensely.
Day 10 : Victoria Falls to Gwango (Hwange area)
Today we continue to Gwango Elephant Lodge which is situated just outside Hwange National Park, named after a local chief. This park is the largest park in Zimbabwe occupying roughly 14,650 square kilometres. Look forward to an included afternoon open vehicle game drive on the Gwango Estate. After dinner, you have the opportunity for an optional night game drive in the Estate to discover nocturnal animals such as porcupines, civet cats, genet and leopard.
Day 11 : Gwango (Hwange area) to Bulawayo
We will head south towards Bulawayo, Zimbabwe鈥檚 second, largest city, and Matobo National Park, which is at the Matobo or Matopos Hills, a scenic area of granite kopjes and wooded valleys. On your way, we visit the Painted Dog Conservation Project. Painted Dogs, also known as African Wild Dogs, are amongst Africa鈥檚 most endangered species. This project is involved in various conservation programs such as anti-poaching, rehabilitation, reintroduction and pack monitoring.
Day 12 : Bulawayo (Matobo National Park)
Enjoy a day filled with the best that Matobo National Park offers, from a game drive to looking for rhino on foot, bringing you as close as possible with these ancient looking giants. Visitors to Matobo National Park regularly spot white and black rhino, sable antelope and impala, among other wildlife.
Day 13 : Bulawayo to Tshipise
We cross the Zimbabwe / South African Border today. We will overnight at the Tshipise Forever Resort, 鈥淭shipise鈥 means 鈥渟omething warm鈥, and the famous Tshipise koppie towers protectively over the resort. Giant Baobab trees dot the landscape and the resort鈥檚 camping grounds are barely visible among the mopane, red bushwillow and jakkalsbessie trees. This lush Bushveld retreat enchants jaded city dwellers. Soak your cares away in the healing waters of the mineral pools.
Day 14 : Tshipise to Kruger National Park
Today you travel to the famous Kruger National Park, now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park which forms with parks in Mozambique and Zimbabwe a natural sanctuary for a huge variety of animals. Here they live a natural life where they must fend for food and territory the same way they did for thousands of years. Here they can start following ancient migratory routes again because fences are coming down between the parks. En route to your campsite, enjoy a game drive in your Premium Overland Safari Vehicle and get ready to spot hippos, giraffes, elephants, zebras, lions, and many other species in one of Africa鈥檚 greatest wildlife areas. You鈥檒l have the option to book an open vehicle night game drive if available.
Day 15 : Kruger National Park
Enjoy another full day game drive in Kruger National Park with approximately 2000 plant, 53 fish, 34 amphibian, 118 reptile, 517 bird and 147 mammal species ready for you to discover. You will experience first-hand why Kruger National Park is known as the flagship of South African national parks. Enjoy a game drive en route to the campsite. Sit around a campfire with your sundowner and enjoy the African night sounds drifting into the camping area.
Day 16 : Kruger National Park to Johannesburg
Drive to Johannesburg for your last night of the trip. Johannesburg is South Africa鈥檚 largest city, and also known as Egoli, or The City of Gold, referring to the gold mining history of this fast-paced city. Book a day or two post tour to explore this fast-paced city. Tonight, you will have the opportunity to have dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants the city has to offer.
