Some ideas for excursions
Horse riding: Drive from Addis via the beautiful landscape towards Sululta forest. Then explore the forest on horseback for about 3 hrs or you can make it the whole day from 10:00 - 05:00 pm.Sululta plain is a wide, shallow valley almost completly surrounded by mountains from which many small rivers drain, feeding the Muger river that flows north - west into the Abbay(Blue Nile). The surrounding mountainsides were covered with forest dominated by Juniperus procera, and the lower slopes supported groves of Acacia spp. However, most of the hillsides around Sululta are now covered with plantations of Eucalyptus, with only odd native trees remaining , except for the groves protected by the Ethiopian Orthodox church.
Mukush Art Gallery: On Bole road, held by Naty Yohannes: this gallery represents about 40 young artists (painters, mainly) coming from the Fine Arts School of Addis Ababa, and we could find there a representative tendency of the contemporary art in Addis.
Entoto Mountains for a short walk in the fresh air of the with eucalyptus trees covered slopes, enjoying the panoramic view on Addis Ababa. The Octagonal Entoto Maryam Church was founded by emperor Menelik at the end of the 19th century and of historical value because is the oldest church of Addis Abeba. The museum in the compound contains a large collection of religious garb, crowns and crosses dating from the Emperor Menelik. At the backside of the church you can see the 鈥減alace鈥 where emperor Menelik and his family was living before they went down to Filwoha hot springs to built a new palace.
The National Museum that exhibits numerous antiquates, historical relics, archaeological and pale-ontological objects including the 3.5 million year old skeleton of Lucy. Or you might choose the beautiful Ethnological Museum housed on the former palace of Haile Selassie, offers an overview of Ethiopian crafts, culture and art. Then continue with the visit of St. George Cathedral that contains several interesting modern paintings, mosaics and collection of ecclesiastical paraphernalia.
The Trinity Cathedral, which is the biggest Orthodox Church in the country decorated by modern and medieval Ethiopian style ecclesiastical paintings and episodes of Ethiopia鈥檚 history, is also one of the places to be visited. In this church emperor Haile Selassie is reburied and you can visit the tombs of Haile Selassie and his wife. The nearby Kiddist Maryam Church is older (founded by empress Zawditu in 1911) and has the Menelik II Mausoleum which contains the tombs of emperor Menelik II, his wife empress Taitu and daughter empress Zawditu.
