David Gareja The rock-cut monastery complex from 6th century
The site is known as Gareja Desert. In the ancient Georgian language Udabno meant both a hermitage-monastery and an unpopulated place. Indeed, no traces of habitation were found throughout the area until the beginning of the 6th century A. D, when so – called Syriac Father David, named Garejeli, established a community of monks. For centuries Gareja monastery has been a significant religious and cultural centre, famous with its school of painting. Many prominent persons have carried out their activities. Out of 13 monasteries spread in these area visitors will see three. Off road way of Gareja semi – desert leads to Lavra and Udabno monasteries. Visit Lavra complex beneath of the sandstone rock and hike up to the Udabno monastery (2 h hike), located at the edge of the natural border of Georgia and Azerbaijan, important with its frescos from 9th up to 14th centuries. On the way back to Tbilisi visit John the Baptist monastery founded later by Holy Father Davids disciple Lukiane.
