Built in the year 1850, Ghum Monastery is the oldest Buddhist monastery in Darjeeling. The original name of this monastery is Yiga Choeling and belongs to the Gelukpa sect of Buddhism. This sect is the follower of Maitreya Buddha or Buddha of Future. Sherab Gyatso, a Mongolian astrologer and Lama, was the founder of this sacred monastery. Presently, numerous monks from across India and Tibet visit this sacred monastery.
