Built in the year 1850, Ghum Monastery is the oldest Buddhist monastery in Darjeeling. The original name of this monastery is Yiga Choeling and belongs to the Gelukpa sect of Buddhism. This sect is the follower of Maitreya Buddha or Buddha of Future. Sherab Gyatso, a Mongolian astrologer and Lama, was the founder of this sacred monastery. Presently, numerous monks from across India and Tibet visit this sacred monastery.
It Is Known For:-
1) Ghum Monastery stands as the oldest monastery in Darjeeling. It is said it has been visited the 13th as well as the 14th Dalai Lama
2) This monastery houses the idol of Buddha which is said to be the oldest existing idol in the country. The enchanting idol of Buddha is 15-foot high and was brought from Tibet
3) Moreover, one can also witness the view of the mighty Kanchenjunga from Ghum Monastery
4) Various monks can be seen meditating here every day
